■About the Kagoshima Prefecture Tea Competition
The Kagoshima Prefecture Tea Competition is an annual competition to evaluate the excellent tea leaves of Kagoshima Prefecture and promote the improvement of tea quality. The awards are decided by comprehensively judging the quality of the first-flush tea produced that year, including the aroma, flavor, and color of the tea leaves in the regular sencha and deep-steamed sencha categories.
The 2024 Kagoshima Tea Competition was held over two days, from September 4th to 5th, at the Kagoshima Tea Market, with 103 entries in the regular sencha category and 101 entries in the deep-steamed sencha category.
In the deep-steamed sencha category, Imamura Tea Garden won two awards: the Kyushu Agricultural Administration Office Director's Award (second place) and the Prefectural Tea Producers Association Chairman's Award (seventh place) .
■ The "deep steamed tea" that "Imamura Tea Garden" has arrived at
Deep-steamed tea is tea that is steamed for a longer time than regular sencha.
While regular sencha tea is steamed for around 30-40 seconds, deep-steamed tea is steamed for over a minute to bring out its mellowness and richness. Another important element in the production of deep-steamed tea is the unique aroma known as "fire aroma." Fire aroma refers to the firing process used to dry the tea in the final stage of tea production, and the aroma that is produced during this process gives the tea leaves a sweetness and depth of flavor.
At Imamura Tea Garden, by skillfully adjusting the balance between steaming and heating, we have arrived at the unique "deep-steamed tea" that allows you to enjoy the original flavor and fragrant aroma of the tea leaves at the same time.
